Celebrate Save Your Vision Month
Since 1927, the American Optometric Association (AOA) has celebrated Save Your Vision Month every March! It is during this time that the AOA calls attention to the importance of eye health and comprehensive eye examinations. Our providers of senior assisted living in Chicago have seen firsthand the effects that poor eyesight has on both individuals and families alike.
Here are some tips to keep your eyes in good shape and reduce potential vision problems.
Get Regular Eye Exams
Many people wait too long before getting an eye exam. Waiting too long before seeing a professional gives any developing problems a chance to continue to progress. Conditions such as glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy should be treated as early as possible. Regular eye exams can help keep problems at bay.
Watch for Symptoms
It is important to be aware of symptoms that something is wrong with your vision. Watch out for the following:
- Double vision
- Redness
- Partial or total vision loss
- Blind spots
- Areas of distorted vision
- Trouble seeing objects in your peripheral vision
- Difficulty telling the difference between colors
- Blurry objects
- Itching sensation
- Fluid coming from the eye
Wear Sunglasses
Sunglasses are an easy way to keep your eyes protected from damaging UV rays. If you are exposed to too many UV rays, your chances of cataracts and macular degeneration increase. Make sure to pick a pair that blocks 99 percent to 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays.
Our providers of senior assisted living in Chicago believe that every month should celebrate good eye health!
